Up for sale is one of the first designs in my PNG shield mug series.
Each one of these started as a 2lb ball of clay that I threw on the potter’s wheel and altered into a “squarish” form by pushing out from the inside with a wooden dowel. The edges are then pinched to create a seal, so that holes can be safely punched to install the beads. From there, all four sides are carved freehand without the use of any stamps or stencils. Each of the 12 beads are made in studio from the same stoneware clay, and get carved, glazed and fired to the same cone 6 temperature, as the main body. I don’t use any measuring devices except for a kitchen scale to weigh the initial ball of clay, so the pieces will vary slightly in height and with. I’ve decided to name this design, “Gopey,” as it’s reminiscent of a playful looking ancestor, that you might see on a traditional gope board.
This turquoise, orange, and white version stands approximately 7.5” tall and 3.75” diagonally across.
